Headshot! by Martin AbelMy first true foray into the world of being a writer technically came at age eleven, with a haiku I successfully entered into the Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans in 1994. For many years, straightforward poetry was my main means of creative expression, and I enjoyed mixed results while continuing to hone my craft. That first haiku and two other poems were printed in my high school literary publication, Writer’s Bloc.

During a college writing assignment, a beloved teacher pointed out that I had accidentally managed to write a prose poem instead of completing the correct writing exercise. This was a turning point for me as a writer, because I suddenly discovered I had free range to use the rich language and metaphor I craved from poetry without the restrictions of stanzas, meter, or verse. Thus began the evolution of my current writing style.

My single largest influence has been Ray Bradbury, both as a writer and a human being. Through his work and words, I found my path, and have enjoyed great happiness journeying it.

Thank you for expressing an interest in my creative work. I hope that you will find as much enjoyment in reading it as I have had bringing it into the world.
